Israeli pullout is result of rocket attacks: Hamas Tue Aug 9, 2:31 PM ET
The radical Islamist group Hamas criticised a call by Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas to stop firing rockets, saying such attacks had been instrumental in Israel's decision to quit the Gaza Strip.
"The president's speech made no reference to the fact that the rockets are the main reason behind our victory," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told AFP.
In a speech before MPs, Palestinian Authority president Abbas said the firing of rockets "must stop so that we can focus on security and economy".
Abu Zuhri said that the Palestinian "resistance" had managed to replicate the achievement of the radical Shiite militia Hezbollah in southern Lebanon by "chasing the enemy out of occupied land."
"He (Abbas) has forgotten that the rockets of the resistance lie at the roots of the departure of the occupation," he added.
Although Hamas and smaller factions such as Islamic Jihad are meant to be observing a de-facto truce, some militants have continue to fire homemade rockets at Israeli targets.
The Qassams, which takes their name after Hamas's armed wing, are notoriously inaccurate and have led to a number of Palestinian fatalities when they have misfired
