The evacuation of the Gaza Strip settlements is expected to be completed by Monday or Tuesday, and the demolition of homes is scheduled to be in full swing by Sunday, security officials told the disengagement cabinet Thursday.
The officials said homes in Kerem Atzmona were the first slated for demolition, and demolition of homes in Rafiah Yam, Gan Or and Pe'at Sadeh would begin Sunday.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told the ministers the Palestinians would not be allowed into the area until the last soldier had left.
"Until the full and complete evacuation of the last soldier and the last piece of equipment, the Palestinians will not, in any way, enter the evacuated area," he said. "Only after everything has been evacuated will it be possible to coordinate the entry of the Palestinians."
Sharon said he was concerned the Palestinian Authority would not be able to contain the Palestinian masses and there would be massive looting once Israel completely pulled out.
The ministers were given an update on the situation at hotels around the country where many of the evacuated families are staying. Some 500 families are staying in approximately 3,000 hotel rooms.
Sharon said the families should be urged to set up new communities in the Negev.
"We must utilize these days in which people are in the hotels to find housing solutions for those who have not cooperated with the government up to now," he said. "This must be done quickly and immediately. We must hear what these families want and do everything possible to provide them with solutions."
Sharon said several communities had expressed an interest in setting up new communities in the Negev, "and this must be dealt with urgently."
"I want it to be clear that we must act quickly and effectively and I do not want people to feel that they are being forgotten as soon as they leave the area," he said. "I want them to be looked after."
Justice Ministry Director-General Aharon Abramovitz told the ministers that lawyers were stationed in the various hotels to provide legal assistance to the families in filling out applications for compensation.
Education Ministry Southern District director Amira Haim said 640 Gush Katif students had signed up for schools in their new communities, and another 942 students had informed the Education Ministry where they intended to go to school in two weeks.
She said 828 parents were refusing to cooperate with the Education Ministry and had not given the information necessary to assign their children to new schools.
Regarding the synagogues, the cabinet decided that their contents would be moved inside Israel, and that various alternatives would be considered to enable moving the structures as well.
